Barney Ford MuseumThe museum, which is located at 111 East Washington Avenue, was designed and built in 1882 for Barney Ford, his wife Julia and their three children. The current owners of the property, the Saddle Rock Society, decided to turn the property into a museum to be a tribute to Barney, a prominent black Coloradoan who first owned the house. The original craftsman was Elias Nashold and back in the day it was considered a showplace home in Breckenridge. Barney Ford was born as a Virginia slave but emerged into a prominent businessman, civic leader, black rights advocate, and mine owner. He was first introduced to Breckenridge during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush and returned years later to open Ford’s Chop Stand located on the corner of Washington Avenue and Main Street. Fire destroyed the building, but he rebuilt it and opened an eatery known as The Saddle Rock. He was inducted into the Colorado Business Hall of Fame and listed as one of the 100 Greatest Coloradoans. The purpose of the museum is to educate the public about the role of African Americans in Colorado history. This building will be added to Breckenridge’s historic sites. |
