Breckenridge Ullr Fest
Breckenridge’s craziest event is celebrated for 6 days to honor the Norse God of Snow, Ullr, and have a great time. Legend has it that Ullr left the valley and took all the snow he usually brings with him. The winter where he was not distinguished, he left and the valley was absent of the white fluffy magical snow. Townsfolk gathered and decided they needed to honor Ullr with parties and a parade in an attempt to lure him back. Due to this celebration, Ullr returns each winter to bless the land with bountiful white stuff. The tradition began back in the early 1960’s and turned into an annual event where locals would celebrate with a parade, bonfire, and lots of partying! Locals believe the more intense the parting the longer the snow fell. Today a few of the events include the Ullympics and the “Mating Game”, now know as the Bachelor/Bachelorette auction. Each year varies establishments organize special events to pay tribute to Ullr. For more information on this year’s events call 970-453-6018. Long Live Ullr!
