Masontown
In 1903, the Masontown Mining and milling company developed a mining camp located near the present day trailhead to Mt. Royal. The company’s mill was a 200 by 300 foot structure with a slanted roof built right at the bottom of a snow slide path. Remnants of scattered bricks can be seen at this site. The buildings that were a part of Masontown were a boarding house, a couple cabins, and a 20-ton cyanide ore mill. It is believed that bootleggers produced moonshine during prohibition. As you hike up to Mt. Royal imagine life as a miner. All of the buildings were destroyed from an avalanche in 1926, but many of the remains are evident today.
