St. JohnsSt. Johns Situated on the Silver Belt two miles south of Montezuma at an altitude of 10,800 feet stands the old ghost town of Saints Johns. John Coley of Empire made early discoveries of silver in 1864 in this exact spot. The Boston Silver Mining Company established a mine for the workers and Saints Johns built a post office, store, sawmill, and smelting furnace. The reason behind the plural name comes from the two patron saints, Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist. The town did not have a saloon but instead a library that had over 300 books. Directions to Saints Johns: Follow Hwy 6 to the bottom of Loveland Pass on the western slope of the Continental Divide. Continue until you come to Hwy 294 (Montezuma Road) right next to Keystone Ski Resort. Go through the town of Montezuma until you see the sign on your right for Saints John. The town is about 2 miles in and can be easily accessed by a 4WD vehicle. |
