Central City and Black Hawk Gambling

The heart of the gold strike saw real activity for Central City and Black Hawk. Central City was the urban center for all the action between 1859 and 1867. During this time the gulch produced $9 million in gold ore and a total of $125 million in precious metals. Gregory gulch was nicknamed “the richest square mile on earth”. The famous Opera House hosted vaudeville and minstrel shows during the boom. In the beginning of the 20th century the mining slowed and the two towns became ghost towns closing up shop. Not until 1930 did the Central City Opera opened its doors again. The old towns became a popular spot for Denver vacationers. In 1990 Colorado gambling was legalized and almost overnight huge revenue poured into these once sleeping towns. The town converted old Victorian brick buildings into casinos, hotels, museums, and fabulous music venues.
Both of these gaming towns are located in a National Historic district that dates back to the time of miners. Black Hawk, quite different than Central City has replaced mountains with casinos and is known as the gambling party place. Your best bet is to get a room there if you plan to participate in the festivities. The serious gamblers go to Black Hawk to test their skills in hopes of winning money. The “New Black Hawk” as it is called is located closest to Denver, Boulder, or Summit County on Hwy 119.
Central City is more conserved than Black Hawk and is quite a refreshing change to break away from the crowds. It was the first Colorado town to open up a gambling. People would line up outside of the Historic Teller House Casino for blocks to get in. Today it is quieter place to observe the significant remains of Colorado mining history.
