DesertDesert – Colorado is in much part a desert/dry region. The Rocky Mountains lifted creating a convulsive up welling of metamorphic rock. As the peaks weathered away they sent massive debris sliding down to lower elevations. The western slope of Colorado is filled with a very dry desert climate. Shrublands dominate the landscape north of Grand Junction with big sagebrush, greasewood, alstbrush and rabbitbrush. Tumbleweed can be seen flying across the highway and the precipitation is about 10 inches a year in some places. Sage and cactus are prominet in these parts of the state. Lizards, crickets, rattlesnakes, and other desert creatures can be seen. The Great Sand Dunes are a perfect example of the desert climate that exists in Colorado. |
