Leadville Colorado

A unique little Victorian town lies high up in the mountains at 10,430 feet above sea level, North America’s highest incorporated city. Leadville, located at top of the Rockies Scenic and Historic Byway, was established as a very prominent mining town. At one time Leadville was considered to be the capital of Colorado. This town displays architecture for the past and miles of old mining relics. For a quaint solitude from the hustle and bustle of Summit County, a short drive to Lake County will be a breath of fresh air. If you are looking for outdoor adventure, Leadville has many mountains to climb, lakes to kayak, biking to explore, and winter activities galore with Ski Cooper resort, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. If you are a history buff and love antiques, then a stop in Leadville should be on your agenda. Hidden in Main Street throughout the elegant Victorian buildings are gift shops, bed and breakfasts, coffee houses, and museums. It is as if you stepped back in time to the way life use to be.

Leadville is truly one of Colorado’s secret gems hidden in the mountains. The town was established with the abundance of Silver that was mined in the surrounding hills and a bi-product at the time Lead. Money began pouring in and those living there at the time built magnificent building including the Tabor Opera House and Tabor Grand Hotel. You can visit the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum and the Healy House and Dexter Cabin State Museum to learn more about the history, the people who fancied Leadville and the stories of a time past.

Many famous individuals got their start in Leadville including J.J. and Molly Brown, H.A.W. Tabor, Guggenheim, and Boettcher. Established with the emergence of miners and merchants mainly from Central and Eastern Europe, much rich and “cosmopolitan” flamboyance came to the town. Fortunes were made by a few of the residents in the late 1800’s and visitors and locals alike can admire the relics. The very famous Tabor Opera House saw great performers such as Harry Houdini, John Philip Sousa, Anna Held, and Oscar Wilde. With a repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, the wealth of many was diminished. The next boom came with the mining of molybdenum in 1918 with the Climax Mine. This is one of the largest underground molybdenum mine in the world. The 10th Mountain Division used Ski Cooper as their original training ground for the soldiers who fought in the Italian campaign that led the Germans toward Austria.
