Rocky Mountain National Park Not far from the wonders of Summit County, Colorado is the famous Rocky Mountain National Park. The terrain, scenery, and informational centers are perfect for everyone in the family. There are numerous activities one can participate within the park year round. These activities include scenic driving tours, hiking and bicycling, camping, horseback riding, mountaineering, photography, stargazing, backcountry camping, skiing and snowshoeing, limited snowmobiling, picnicking, ranger led activities, wildlife and wildflower viewing and bird watching.  Backcountry camping is exciting and gives you a chance to escape to a secluded spot out in the wilderness. Permits are required and reservations start on March 1 each year.  Road biking is popular on Trail Ridge Road. The climb from Estes Park is about 3700 feet reaching an altitude over 12,000 feet. The ride down to Grand Lake is 3400 feet.  The early settlers of the Rocky Mountains stocked the streams with species of trout. Fishing is a popular recreational activity in the Rocky Mountains. Permits are required.  Most visitors of the area enjoy one of the 355 miles of trails in the park ranging from easy to strenuous.  Horses with guides can be hired inside the park. There are 260 miles dedicated to trail stock animals travel use. Ask a park ranger which trails are open to use.  Pets are welcome in the park only in campgrounds, picnic areas and along the roadside. They must remain leashed the entire time.  Check with the Rocky Mountain Nature Association for the summer seminar programs that are going on and the activities in Grand Lake and Estes Park. The elk- mating season (fall) is a great time to view these glorious animals in their natural setting. Wildflowers are best viewed in June and July.
