White River National ForestLocated in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, approximately three to four hours west of Denver, lies the White River National Forest. The White River, due to the many recreational uses, is ranked as one of the top five forests nationwide for the total recreation use. These include eleven ski areas, eight wilderness areas, trails, and 70 Forest Service developed campgrounds and picnic grounds. Not to forget the 1,337 miles of trails used for biking, hiking, four-wheel driving, hunting, fishing snowmobiling, horseback riding, and backpacking. Lake and river activity in the forest attracts many individuals for sailing and whitewater rafting. The visitor can participate in both summer and winter activities. However the altitude in this area is over 5,000 feet and altitude can be a factor. The weather in the mountains can change in a moment so prepare for all types, even snow in the summer months. Downhill skiing and snowboard opportunities are available at Arapahoe Basin, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Buttermilk, Copper Mountain, Keystone, Sunlight, and Snowmass all located on the National Forest lands. Nordic skiing, snowshoers, and snowmobilers will find ample trails throughout the forest. Feel free to visit the forest headquarters in Silverthorne to get the latest information, fire restrictions, and trail maps. Excellent fishing opportunities exist in the many streams and lakes located within the National Forest. The more common species found include rainbow trout, brook trout, lake trout, and mountain whitefish. National Forest land is open to hunting and fishing in accordance with state laws and regulations. You must have a valid Colorado hunting or fishing license.
