Hiking in Silverthorne – Buffalo Mountain
Buffalo is a distinctive landmark for locals and visitors to the High country. Quite contrasting to the other jagged mountains of the Gore Range, Buffalo has a round shape similar to that of a buffalo. I personally think it looks like two mushrooms from past avalanches but others may disagree. To access the trail head, exit the Silverthorne exit and head north to the first stop light. Turn left by the seven eleven and continue up Wilderness Road to the top where there is a circle and small parking area. There are two trail heads; you want to head up the one that is NOT marked Lily Pad Trail. The beginning section of the trail is wide and meanders through a blanketed dense forest. The trail will eventually come to a cabin. Head west and look for a steep trail heading upwards. Continue on this trail, if you feel you have gotten lost head left and look for a better defined trail up the mountain. You will pass through the avalanche areas and numerous switchbacks up to the top. Once at the top you will be rewarded with views of Lake Dillon in its entirety, the town of Frisco, Gray and Torreys, and I-70 as it disappeared into the Eisenhower tunnel. Be aware that weather can change drastically so be prepared and head down if clouds suddenly roll in.
