AlpineAlpine – Alpine tundra starts above timberline at about 11,200 and extend all the way to the top. Many shrubs, plants and forbs thrive in this environment. The animals that live here are marmots, pikas and voles. The climate is severe with a very short growing season. Trees will not grow at this environment and the slopes are buffeted by ferocious winds and lack of oxygen. One of the famous alpine growing flower is the Indian Paintbrush which can be seen on hikes in the high mountain areas. Lichen can be seen growing on rocks and around the glacier lakes hidden between the mountains. |
