Architectural DesignArchitectural Design 101 One of the most exciting steps in building a custom home is designing the floor plan. However, if you are unsure exactly what you are looking for it is best to look at 25-75 homes. Tearing out pages in magazines is also a great way to narrow down exactly what features you would like to see in your new home. It will take several months to design a custom home so make sure you have a great personality match with your architect. Below are 31 questions to ask yourself so that you will be prepared when you sit down with the architect. 1. Do you want a single or multiple story home? 2. Where do you want the master suite? Upstairs or down? 3. Where do you want the guest suite – down or up (consider elders)? 4. Do you want an elevator? 5. Would you like a game room? 6. Should it be big enough for a billiard table? 7. Would you like a sports bar look with TVs? 8. Have you considered enough storage for children’s games? 9. Is there a bathroom near the game room? 10. Would you like the laundry to be in a separate room or close to the master suite? 11. Think about a built-in ironing board in the master closet. 12. How many entrances would you like to the master suite? 13. Would you like a separate entrance from the master bath? 14. Design the master closet with multiple clothes dressers, all which are separate from the sleeping area. 15. If you have a laundry room lave space for drying racks and laundry sorting bins. 16. You might want to add a ceiling fan to make folding laundry more pleasant. 17. Make room for a wine cellar, freezer, or storage space in the laundry room. 18. Would you like your garage to be heated? 19. How much extra room do you need to storage your things in the garage? 20. How many cars would you like in a covered space? 21. Make sure you have room entering and exiting your vehicles from the garage. 22. Think about energy efficient garage doors that will keep heat in and prevent freezing problems during the winter. 23. Would you like a separate door entering the garage to the outside? Into the house? 24. Have you thought about placing a faucet with hot/cold water outside the garage and over the driveway? 25. You may want to have a whole house water filtration system? 26. What about a window in your garage? Useful especially if you plan on working out of your garage. 27. Where would you like the center of your focus to be? 28. Would a separate home theater room be appropriate for your home? 29. Where do you want to have your windows? 30. Vaulted ceilings and larger doors give the home a grand appearance. 31. How thick would you like your walls? The thicker the wall the more insulation. |
