Blue RiverIn 1859 shouts of "Gold" ricocheted in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and Breckenridge sprang up as a mining camp on the banks of the Blue River. Today the remains of mining on the Blue River are apparent but the Blue River is now known for it's many recreational uses. The Blue River originates at Goose Pasture Tarn Lake north of Breckenridge. The river then flows straight through the town of Breckenridge. Many people will gather by the river next to the Riverwalk center for a picnic or to relax to the sound of the flowing water. The river continues past the Breckenridge Recreation center where kayakers practice their maneuvers in the kayak play park. Further down many flyfishing enthusiasts try their luck casting for a big fish. The river eventually drains into Lake Dillon but continues below the dam in Silverthorne. The river winds through the factory stores and north toward Green Mountain Reservoir. During a large run off year when a large amount of water needs to be released from the dam, Performance Tours Rafting offers raft trips down the blue river. At low waters, flyfishing is practiced all down this section of the river. The Blue eventually flows into Green Mountain Reservoir and continues after the dam to supply water to Denver. |
