Colorado Mountain Sun Safety

The sun can be bountiful, yet extremely damaging. The effects of UV radiation, especially in the mountains, can be quite hazardous to your skin and eyes with overexposure and lack of proper protection.

UV radiation can have positive effects as well. The great feeling of the warmth of the sun hitting your face on the chairlift, the photosynthesis that makes the plants grow, and the combination of vitamin D reacting in the body all have beneficial effects that elevate mood and kill pathogens. However, too much of a good thing can cause detrimental health problems for the skin and eyes with overindulgence. Children are at the greatest risk because they spend more time having fun outdoors than adults. Children are also not aware of the dangers the sun can cause. It is vital to protect your children with ample sunscreen, protective clothing, and sunglasses. Sunburn during childhood increases the risk of melanoma later in life.

Sunlight can also cause damage to the tissues of the eye. Studies have concluded that long hours in the sun without eye protection increases the chances of developing eye diseases, including cataracts. Cataracts are a form of eye damage that causes the loss of transparency in the lens, clouding vision. Another effect of intense exposeure to the sun is called photokeratitis or “snow blindness”. This is a common effect of UV radiation in the high country with the reflection of the sun off the snow. The effects are painful and quite scary, for loss of site, painful burning, and watery eyes may last for up to 48 hours. A cold compress and dark surroundings will help relieve the pain. Repetitive outdoor exposeure without the use of protective eyewear may lead to further complications.

Cosmetic skin problems can be attributed to chronic overexposure to the sun. The sun changes the texture and weakens the elastic properties of the skin causing the skin to become leathery and wrinkled. Sun-induced skin damage causes creases and furrows, brown spots, and even precancerous lesions.
