Combat Altitude Sickness When your body ascends from a lower altitude to a higher altitude above 8,000 feet, your body will be effected. At higher altitudes atmospheric pressure decreases, the air is thinner and less oxygen is available. High in the mountains of Summit County, it is also colder, drier and the ultraviolet rays from the sun are stronger. The extent to which a visitor is affected depends on how quickly you ascent, what elevation you attain, how hard you exercise, what you eat and drink, and what health problems you may have. Your breathing may be increased and shortness of breath is common, especially when exercising. The heart must work a bit harder and will beat faster at a higher altitude until your body becomes fully acclimated (aprox. 2-3 weeks). If you develop nausea, unusual tiredness, headache, or have difficulty sleeping then you might have mountain altitude sickness. Listen to your body, if you feel worse, seek medical attention! The best method to combat Altitude sickness is to start before you leave your home. Eat foods high in carbohydrates, reduce salty foods, and limit alcohol and caffeine consumption. Most importantly be aware of your physical capabilities and increase fluids, especially water.
