Decorating the outside of your Colorado Home

Summit County Decorating the outside of your Colorado HomeLooking to spruce up the landscaping of your Colorado Mountain Home? Taking into consideration that for about 5 months your lot will be covered with snow, the summer months can shine with a few tips in gardening and outdoor decorating.

Flowers – Plants need certain ideal characteristics to grow in the harsh climate of Colorado’s High County. If you are planning on growing a perennial plant you could try Bearded Iris, Buttercup, Columbine, Daffodils, Forget-Me-Not, Foxglove, Mexican Blanket Flower, Heliotrope, Iceland Poppy, Lupine, Painted Daisy, Sweet Pea, Tiger Lily, and Violet. These flowers are beautiful and can withstand the elements presented in high altitude. A few of the annual plants are Marigold, Californian Poppy, Gladiolus, Pansy, Petunia, and Zinnia.

Grass – Using grass to line a front or back yard works well in the high county. Drought can have an effect on grass and occasional watering will be necessary.

Stone – Stone walkways, bases for a home, decks, etc. Stone can be used anywhere and has grown with use.

Water – If you are looking for a unique decorating idea, why not try building a fountain. This can be done with stones, rocks and a water pump in which you can create a great water flow that continually circulates.

Trees – Some of the trees that survive well in the high country are aspen, cottonwood, Bristlecone Pine, Lumber Pine, Fir, Lodgepole Pine, Mountain Ash, Rocky Mountain Juniper, and Serviceberry.

Shrubs - Shrubs can be used as a border or for decorating an outdoor area. The type of shrubs that grow well in the high country are kinnikinnik, silver sagebrush, rabbitbrush, waxflower, common juniper, twinberry, mountain ninebark, shrubby cinquefoil, woods rose, wild rose russet buffaloberry, red-berried elder, western thimbleberry, currants, rock-spirea, mountainspray, bog birch, ash, willow, dogwood, serviceberry, and Rocky Mountain maple.
