Energy Efficient Environmentally Friendly HomesDid you know you energy efficiency is not as hard as you thing? Not only is it easy, it saves you money, makes your home more comfortable, and it decreases pollution! Sandy Mortensen, a Summit County resident, built her home 20 miles north of Silverthorne and saved $30,000 by not hooking up electricity from the regional powerplant. Instead she installed 12 solar panels on a shed next to her house. Through photovoltaic converters, sunlight provides enough energy to run her clothes washer, the dryer, the televisions, computer, vacuum and even the power tools that were used to build the house. She wanted her home to be environmentally friendly, yet comfortable and she achieved just that. Her lifestyle also has an effect of the efficiency of the house. She plans laundry time and vacuuming during daylight hours and closes doors to the different heating zones in the house. Instead of cranking the heat, she wears a sweater when it’s cold. She also recommends replacing glass coffeepots with more efficient thermos models. There are many resources you can find to improve your home and reduce your electricity costs. Below are a few simple changes that can save you money and reduce pollution. Unfortunately, much of the energy we use and pay for is lost. Energy dollars pour out of homes through drafty doors, windows, uninsulated attics, walls, floors, and basements. Even some idle (turned off) appliances use energy 24 hours a day. Energy efficiency means getting the most from every energy unit by using state-of-the-art technologies to provide daily needs -- comfortable homes, profitable businesses, convenient transportation. It is the single most immediate, cost-effective way to reduce energy use and pollution. Related Energy Efficient Homes Information:
