Kayaking on the Blue River
The Blue River offers a variety of kayaking terrain for the beginner to the advanced kayaker. The first spot of play is at the Breckenridge Recreation Center where kayakers have fun in a man-made kayak play park. Similar to a snowboard park or a skateboard park, a kayak play allows the paddler to play on water formations. The park is built with various rock formations that direct the water flow in a certain direction creating whitewater characteristics. Each formation offers eddies for the kayakers to rest or wait their turn to take part in the water feature. For more information contact the town at (970) 453-1734. The second kayak spot on the River is below the Dillon Reservoir dam known as the upper blue. This section of river only runs when enough water has filled Dillon Reservoir or Denver needs more water. (Check the river flow to see if it is runable). The Upper Blue starts out with easy class I – II rapids and moves on to a series of Class III technical rapids. When running, the Upper Blue offers many water formations to play on for hours. Finally, located below Green Mountain Reservoir, the Lower Blue runs through a spectacular canyon. This Class III river offers some of the most beautiful scenery. There are many waves and holes to play on too. Remember: The Upper and Lower sections of the Blue River come from the bottom of the dam meaning the water temperatures are very cold so dress appropriately. Water levels are constantly changing so check the flow before you go and, of course, have fun
