Mardi Gras If you are not in New Orleans, Summit County is the place to celebrate Fat Tuesday. The ski resorts throw their own parties. Nightlife around the towns provides much excitement with great music, dancing, and lots of beads! So if you decide to celebrate the Louisiana tradition get your beads, masks, and costumes ready. Marti Gras, meaning Fat Tuesday in English, is always celebrated 47 days before Easter, the day before Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of Lent. The official colors of the holiday are purple representing justice, green for faith, and gold meaning power. These were chosen by the king of the carnival, Rex and have become part of the tradition. Beads during the time of Mardi Gras become very popular item and many times grown men and women will fight and beg for them. A carnival, literally meaning “farewell to the flesh”, to obtain from meat during lent, now is known as a colorful celebration of costumes, parades and parties. Summit County offers all the festivities even though we might not be at the bayou. Copper Mountain – Beads, parades, New Orleans brass band, drink specials and why not party at the only Colorado lodge called Mardi Gras! Keystone – A great street party and parade for kids of all ages at River Run. Breckenridge – See the crowning of King and Queen and a festive parade down Main Street. Get ready for some great Cajun food and lots of beads!
