Mineral Belt Trail Mineral Belt Trail The Mineral Belt is the highest and most spectacular paved pathway in Colorado. Located in Leadville, you will travel through aspen groves, conifer forests, wildflower meadows, open vista sage parks, and mining relics. The trail is approximately 12.5 miles and can be accessed in both winter and summer. The trail can accommodate bicycles, walkers, wheelchairs, strollers and in-line skaters. In the winter, the trail is groomed to offer Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and winter biking. The trail begins downtown Leadville, heads downhill to the West, crosses the highway, goes behind Colorado Mountain College, climbs up to California Gulch, traverses to Matchless Mine valley and finally ends back down in Leadville. The entire ride takes about 3 hours. The best part of this trail is the history behind every turn. The trail integrates portions of the grades of the three major rail lines that served the Leadville Mining District around the turn of the century. You will learn about the stories of the notable figures from Colorado’s History that went from Rags to Riches. The Mineral Belt Trail was conceived to identify methods of mitigating impacts to natural and historic resources resulting from the cleanup of the California Gulch Superfund Site.
