Montezuma - Unique Excursion
Montezuma
Atmosphere changes when you pass Keystone on Montezuma road. Vistas of stunning pine forests, glimpses of the Snake River, and a steep switchback road carry you to this enchanting place. Montezuma, named for the Aztec conqueror famous for his hoards of golden treasure, started as a tent community for miners in the late 1860’s. The town mainly produced silver in the mining days, but today is the hub for extreme backcountry ski terrain, hiking, mountain biking and ice climbing. Those well prepared for a rigorous workout are rewarded with rocky ridgeline peaks of the Continental Divide and an outdoor experience to remember. A stop at the Soul House coffeehouse is a great start to your adventurous day. The town is famous for it’s grueling 24 hour mountain bike race that laces over the Divide in a series of loops that span up to 14,000 ft and all end up back at Montezuma. In a town nestled in the woods at over 10,000 feet you are bound to relic it’s unique quaintness.
