San Juan RiverSan Juan One of the favorite spots for the students who go to school at Fort Lewis in Durango is the town run. Commercial trips are quite popular as well on this section of river. One of the best waves around is Smelter rapid. At high water it looks beefy and intimidating but once you break through the wave is tons of fun. The put in can be anywhere you want, but usually I put in at 32nd street and take out at the Four Corners Riversports take out. The section is about 5 miles and can be shuttled with a bike. Wondering where many of those pictures of the kayakers boating through a very narrow waterfall? This is Lime Creek. You must be a Class V+ boater and get ready to drop a 25-foot or so drop. Daring adrenaline junkies, who may not be ready to make the leap of faith in your kayak, can jump off a rock on the right side of the river. |
