Save your skin on your trip to Summit County

Many people make the mistake of not applying sun screen because it is cloudy or they are looking to get the “goggle” tan. The sun is much more intense in Summit County than at a lower altitude and even if you continuously apply sunscreen, you will still see some color if you are out on the slopes all day. There are so many fun recreational activities one can participate in the Summit County outdoors; below are a few suggestions to protect your skin and eyes.

- The peak UV radiation is between the hours of 10am and 3pm. It is best to take a break from the slopes during this time frame for lunch or a snack indoors.

- The sun still produces UV even on cloudy days and you can still get sun burned.

- The higher in altitude you go, the less atmosphere there is to protect you from the sun.

- When skiing, cover your face with a helmet, neck warmer, balaclava, beanie, goggles, or sunglasses (if it is warm). What ever skin is still exposed needs to be covered in SPF 30+ sunscreen.

- Use waterproof SPF 30+ sunscreen 20 minutes before venturing outside, bring it with you, and reapply regularly

- Sunglasses and goggles should fit so that sunlight will not shine over the top and into your eyes.

- Use a wide brimmed hat if spending time outdoors

- Teach young children to be sun smart. Have them apply sunscreen, use sunglasses, and wear a hat.

- The ultraviolet radiation is more severe in alpine regions than at sea level and is incredibly efficient at reflecting off the snow: up to 90%. It is extremely important to protect the tip of your nose, ears, and chin.

- Snow blindness is caused by the exposure to intense ultraviolet light reflected off the water or snow into the eyes.

- Use sunglasses labeled “absorbs UV up to 400nm”
