Spec Homes A Spec home is a home that a builder constructs without the specific design of a customer. Oftentimes they are show-homes that are built to display the builder's craftsmanship and attract new customers with the latest features, bells and whistles. These homes are built in anticipation of customers that will see the home and be enticed to buy. Other times they are used as offices for the real estate staff until the final home in the development is built and the model home then will eventually be sold. If you are in the market for a new home, a spec home is an excellent way to get information about the builder and the materials they plan to use. You will first hand account of the craftsmanship that the builder places into his work. Remember that spec homes can be deceptive. Make sure you know what is included in the purchase price if it will be similar to the model home or is the model home equipped with all the upgrades increasing the price of your home. For example, make sure the countertops, appliances, tile, finished basement or crown molding is a standard option and what is an upgrade. Make sure you know what the standard package includes and what is considered an upgrade.
