Tenmile CanyonTenmile Canyon is along the interstate between Copper Mountain and Frisco. This area is unique in that you have ice-climbing, kayaking, backcountry skiing, and a major highway running right through it. Looking to your left from Frisco, you will see lots of nice easy to moderate ice climbs with casual approaches. The downside is that most routes are the bottoms of avalanche chutes, so it is only sane to climb here early in the season before heavy snow falls. As Ten Mile creek tumbles from headwaters near Climax and Fremont Pass (11,318') on CO91, advanced kayakers follow the river with spring run off all the way to Lake Dillon. Spring also brings out experienced backcountry enthusiasts hiking up the sky shoot adjacent to Copper Mountain. The canyon that hosts I-70 can become extremely dangerous in the winter months. When the snow begins to melts the canyon creates the perfect environment for black ice so be careful. |
