The Rocky Mountains

Located in the western section of North America, the Rocky Mountains, stretch more than 3000 miles all the way from Mexico, through the continental United States, into Canada and Alaska. Mount Elbert, in Colorado, is the highest peak at 14,433 feet. The Rocky Mountain range was created during the Laramide orogeny period that started 70 million years ago and ended 30 million years ago. The mountains raised almost as high as the Himalayas but many broke off and became stretched creating basins and ranges. The first recorded wagon train across the Rocky Mountains was completed in 1832 by Benjamin Bonneville. The population of the Rocky Montains is not dense with an average of four people per square kilometer. However, many people visit the Rockies in North America every year. Whether participating in recreation activities or just admiring the beauty of the mountains. Some of the main tourist areas in the Rocky Mountains are Pikes Peak, Royal Gorge, Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park and Glacier National Park. Many of the most popular ski resorts in Colorado are part of the Rocky Mountain range. These include Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin, Copper Mountain, Vail and Aspen.
