Type of Summit County riding and the right bike to rent

Summit County Type of Summit County riding and the right bike to rentWhen visiting Summit County in the summer months, it is imperative that you get out and go on a bike ride in the mountains. The area has paved bike paths for the beginners, steep single track for the more advanced riders, and everything in-between. If you do not want to travel with your bike or would prefer top-of-line gear, renting a well fitted bike in Breckenridge is a good idea. Outlined below are the different types of riding you plan to do and the bikes to suit that riding. Shop owners are knowledgeable and friendly and will help gear you up for the type of riding you wish to do. There are 3 main types of bikes fully rigid (no suspension), hard tail (front fork suspension only), and full suspension (both front and rear suspension).
The kind of trails and riding that you'll be doing will help determine the type of suspension you'll need. To make things easy, let's say that there are three categories of rides/trails:
Type of riding:

Cross County
Trails will be a mix of terrain and surfaces: smooth spots, some rocks, roots, and water. Double-width and single-track sections, hills and flats. For the majority of novices and seasoned riders, this will be the terrain of choice most of the time, and the hard tail front suspension fork will work fine.

Technical Trail
You will encounter few smooth surfaces and will discover bigger rocks, roots, and potholes, and the overall ride will feel more broken up with lots more obstacles. Over years of heavy use and riding, lot of pristine single-track trails that were once smooth and flowing have had their ground surfaces worn down, exposing rocks and roots. The potholes between them get deeper and the trail becomes vastly more challenging and now technical.

Downhill
Usually trails serviced by a lift at a ski area. The bike of preference will be a full suspension and will tend to have considerably more inches of travel in both front and rear shocks and be fully active with little or very few adjustment options. It's also entirely possible to ride downhill on a cross-country-style full-suspension with just a couple of inches of travel in front and rear as well as on just a hard tail. Taking the time to pick a smoother fall line down the hill will be important.

Types of Bikes

Rigid
The term describes a bike that is without any kind of suspension. Road bikes do not have any kind of shock suspension because they are usually kept on the road away from rocks, trees, rivers, and stumps. If you are looking to just stay on the paved areas you might think about getting a rigid bike rental. It is entirely possible to start mountain biking without the use of any suspension. If the trails or dirt roads that you ride are not too battered, or if you're going to be riding your mountain bike on the road, you probably will not notice a huge difference without it -- but if you want to explore out of your realm onto new terrain and trails, suspension may be very helpful.

Hard tail – A hard tail is defined by a front suspension only. The front shock takes the work out of your arms and absorbs most of the impact. Many of the front forks now have fine-tuning adjustments that will make the compression a little softer or a bit stiffer depending on preference. Some forks provide a complete lockout feature, making the front completely rigid. Overall weight of most hard tails tends to be lighter then many full-suspension bikes. With less wear, tear, and fatigue on the arms and less jarring, it's possible to ride longer and increase the speed at which you can ride a trail safely.

Full suspension or Dual suspension (dualie)
Many times a full suspension frame can be a bit heaver, but much softer for off-road riding. People love the control of a full suspension bike and love to go out and ride it. It provides a better overall ride particularly on very rough, fast descents. Some believe that a dualie handles better on twisty trails because the rear wheel stays more in touch with the ground.

Child trailer
Bike shops in Breckenridge rent trailers that you can take your very young child or pet along for the ride. The trailer is fitted to the rear of the bike and the passenger will be relaxed sitting or sleeping in the padded seat.

Trailer Bikes or tag-alongs
The shops have a contraption that allows a small bike to hook onto the larger bike at the seat post so that older children can pedal along with you.

Junior bike
If your child is older and a more skilled rider, they may prefer their own bike. The bike shops rent smaller bikes for kids with or with out training wheels.

Tandem Bike
Relax and enjoy the company of each other while riding a tandem bike. Rentals are available at various shops throughout Summit County.
