What are building codes?
The building codes were developed to provide minimum standards for the protection of life, limb, property, and environment and for the safety and welfare of the consumer, general public and the owners and occupants of residential buildings. These codes are not intended to limit materials, appliances, equipment or methods of design or construction not specifically prescribed in the code. The code book is not the end all of building materials and designs. If using alternative construction methods or materials, you will need to prove that this way is as good or better to the satisfaction of the building official.
