Wildlife in the High Country
When hiking, biking or just spending time outdoors in Summit County, one would expect to find certain wildlife living around us. However, in the 10 years that I have lived in Summit County, I had never seen any more than deer, birds, elk, moose, fox, marmot, pika and chipmunks. Until one day on a bike ride of French Gulch, I saw my very first black bear crossing the street. It had to be the most amazing experience watching him come out of the woods, look both ways before crossing the street, glancing our way and quickly moving to the other side of the road. Now people have asked me before if there were bears in Summit County and should you be concerned. Based on my previous experience, I would assure people that I have never seen a bear or heard of any problems with bears. However, they are out there and I have experienced a very big black one first hand. Now in no way would I like to sway people away from traveling in the backcountry but be aware that there are bears living among us. Most of the time bears will not harm humans, they will only attack if they feel threatened or their cubs are in danger. The mountains of Colorado are beautiful and honestly you are more likely to get struck by lightening then get attacked by a bear or other animal. So leave only footprints, respect the outdoors, and make sure you enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer.
